The rules and structure of D&D also lent a certain pre-loaded stable quality to the OOTS world. The author started the comic as a homage to D&D. It feels like a gradual step towards the sort of problems erfworld ran into where the author wrote themselves into a hole to some extent, and didn't know how to get out. Some of the recent exposition hints at the authors annoyance with this, from the mocking of D&D obsessed fans to the "well, that plan wouldn't work" talk involving the Beyonder. It feels like the author doesn't know how to land this next arc in a plausible way. I am now skeptical we will see the end of the story before the author dies or gets sick of it. With the updates grinding to a pitiful crawl, and nothing happening in the most recent updates but tangential exposition, it's obvious the author is stuck.
